PDF to EPUB turns a text-based PDF into a reflowable eBook that opens correctly in Calibre, Apple Books, Kobo, Adobe Digital Editions and Google Play Books. Add the PDF from your device, Google Drive or Dropbox, set a title and author, pick how many pages form each chapter, then download the EPUB. The tool extracts text with pdf.js and builds a valid EPUB 3.0 archive in your browser, so the file never leaves your device. Note: scanned or image-only PDFs need OCR first.
What is a PDF to EPUB converter?
A PDF to EPUB converter turns a fixed-layout document into a reflowable eBook. The PDF stores every letter at a fixed position on the page, which is fine for printing but painful on a phone: you end up zooming, panning and squinting. EPUB throws away fixed positions and keeps only the text structure — paragraphs, headings, chapter breaks — so the reader can choose a font size, a theme and a screen width without breaking the layout.
That is why people convert PDFs to EPUB before reading long documents on an e-reader. Novels, reports and manuals all become comfortable on a Kindle-like screen once reflowed. The output of this tool is EPUB 3.0, the current open standard published by the W3C. It uses XHTML for the content and a navigation document for the table of contents, which is what modern readers expect.
The formal details live in the EPUB 3.3 specification. If you want the background, the EPUB Wikipedia page is a good starting point, and the W3C publishing activity tracks its evolution.
How to convert PDF to EPUB in 5 steps
The process is short and needs no account. Follow these steps and the first EPUB will be ready in a couple of minutes.
- Add your PDFDrag a text-based PDF onto the upload card, click Browse, or import directly from Google Drive or Dropbox. The tool loads the file inside your browser using pdf.js.
- Preview and set metadataThe first page is extracted and shown on the left so you can confirm the PDF has real text. Add a book title and an optional author.
- Choose chapters and pagesSet how many PDF pages form each EPUB chapter. Pick All pages or a custom range (1-50, 55-90). Long PDFs split into numbered chapters automatically.
- Convert and previewClick Convert to EPUB. The tool extracts text, groups it into paragraphs and headings, and builds a valid EPUB 3.0 archive with a table of contents.
- Download and readPress Download EPUB to save the file. Open it in Calibre, Apple Books, Kobo, Adobe Digital Editions, Google Play Books or any EPUB reader.
Extraction speed depends on page count and text density. A 200-page novel usually finishes in under a minute. Very large or complex PDFs may take longer because each page is read and reflowed individually.
Everything the converter can do
| Setting | Options | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Book title | Text | Sets the EPUB title in the OPF metadata and the reader's library. |
| Author | Optional text | Sets the EPUB creator in the OPF metadata. |
| Pages per chapter | 1 – 200 | Groups PDF pages into chapters. Each chapter becomes one XHTML file and one TOC entry. |
| Pages | All, custom range | Converts the whole PDF or a range like 1-50, 55-90. |
| Text preview | First page | Shows extracted text before conversion so you can confirm it has a text layer. |
| Low-text warning | Automatic | Flags pages that yield almost no text — a sign the PDF is scanned and needs OCR. |
| Import sources | Device, Google Drive, Dropbox, clipboard | Loads the PDF without leaving the browser. |
Why reflow matters for eBooks
A PDF page is a canvas of fixed size. Font, line breaks and margins are baked in. That works for printing but fights the reader on every other screen: a 6-inch e-reader, a phone in portrait, a tablet in landscape. EPUB stores the text semantically, and the reader decides how to draw it.
Reader-controlled typography
The user picks the font size, line spacing and margin. Headings stay headings, paragraphs stay paragraphs, and the page never breaks the layout.
Theme and night mode
Night mode, sepia and high-contrast themes work because colours and backgrounds are chosen by the reader, not baked into the page.
Bookmarks and search
Readers can jump between chapters from the TOC, search for words, and remember the exact reading position across devices.
Honest limit: this tool flattens complex layouts. Multi-column pages, tables, footnotes and images come out as plain paragraphs. EPUB is a text format, and reflowing fixed-position elements cleanly is a much harder problem. If you need images and tables preserved, try PDF to Word or PDF to HTML instead.
Text-based vs scanned PDFs
PDFs come in two broad types, and only one of them works here.
Text-based PDFs
Created by Word, Google Docs, LaTeX or a publisher. They contain a real text layer that can be selected, copied and extracted. These convert perfectly.
Scanned PDFs
Created by a scanner or a phone camera. Each page is a picture with no text layer. Selecting text does nothing. These need OCR first.
Quick test
Open the PDF and try to select a sentence with your mouse. If the text highlights, it has a text layer and this tool will read it. If nothing highlights, it is scanned.
Honest limit: OCR is not included in this tool. OCR engines add tens of megabytes and take much longer, so they belong in a dedicated workflow. If you have a scanned book, run it through an OCR tool first, save the result as a text-based PDF, then come back here.
Your PDF stays private
Everything happens in your browser. The PDF is loaded with pdf.js, the text is extracted page by page, and the EPUB archive is built with JSZip. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored. When you close the tab, the file is gone from memory.
- Local processing. Text extraction and EPUB packaging both run on your device, so confidential documents never leave your computer or phone.
- Direct cloud downloads. When you import from Google Drive or Dropbox, your browser fetches the file straight from that provider after you grant access.
- No account needed. You can convert without signing in. Read our privacy policy for details about the site itself.
Tips for better EPUBs
- Check for a text layer first. Select a line with your mouse. If it highlights, the PDF will work.
- Set the title before converting. The title shows up in the reader's library, so make it recognisable.
- Choose chapters wisely. 10 pages per chapter suits most books. Use 1 for very short documents, or 30 for long novels.
- Convert a page range first. A 20-page slice is a good smoke test before the full book.
- Open the EPUB in Calibre to check. Calibre's preview is a strict validator and catches structural problems before you share the file.
- Compress the source PDF. Smaller PDFs convert faster. Run them through our Compress PDF tool first.
Common problems and quick fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| EPUB is nearly empty | Scanned PDF with no text layer | Run it through an OCR tool first, then convert. |
| Headings turned into paragraphs | Font sizes too similar across the document | The tool uses a median-height heuristic; there is no manual override, so a PDF with uniform font sizes will not produce headings. |
| Paragraphs are jumbled | Multi-column PDF | EPUB reflows to single-column text; use PDF to HTML or PDF to Word for column-heavy layouts. |
| Reader says the EPUB is invalid | Very old reader without EPUB 3 support | Open in Calibre, Apple Books, Kobo, Thorium or Google Play Books; the file follows the EPUB 3.0 standard. |
| Page range produces nothing | Range outside the document | Check the page count in the stats bar and retry. |
| Cloud import fails | The sign-in window was blocked | Allow pop-ups for this site, then press the Drive or Dropbox button again. |
EPUB readers that open the output
The EPUB this tool produces is standard EPUB 3.0 and opens in every major reader.
Calibre
The reference EPUB tool. Opens, previews, validates and converts EPUBs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
Apple Books
Opens EPUBs on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Syncs reading position through iCloud.
Kobo & Kindle
Kobo reads EPUB natively. Kindle prefers AZW3, so convert the EPUB with Calibre first.
Google Play Books
Uploads and reads EPUBs on Android, iOS and the web. Syncs across devices.
Adobe Digital Editions
A common reader for library books. Handles DRM-free and DRM-protected EPUBs.
Thorium Reader
Open-source, accessible, cross-platform. Maintained by EDRLab with strong support for EPUB 3 features.
Import from Drive and Dropbox, then share
You do not need to download the PDF to your phone first. The upload card includes Google Drive and Dropbox buttons, and the editor toolbar repeats them. The provider opens its own file picker, you select the PDF, and the tool downloads it into the page with a live progress bar.
After conversion, the share panel appears under the download button. You can post a link to the tool on WhatsApp, Facebook, X, LinkedIn or Telegram, send it by email, or copy the link. On phones and tablets that support the Web Share API, the Share EPUB file button opens the system share sheet with the eBook attached.
