PDF to Word extracts the text layer from a PDF and rebuilds it as an editable .docx document. Load a text-based PDF, set the title and author, choose which pages to convert, then download a real Word file with detected headings, paragraph grouping and optional page breaks. It works on digital PDFs — not scanned images, which need OCR first. Everything runs in your browser, so your document never leaves your device.
What is a PDF to Word converter?
A PDF to Word converter reads the text layer inside a PDF and rebuilds it as an editable .docx document. PDFs fix every character at a precise position on the page; Word reflows text. The converter's job is to read the words, reconstruct reading order, group lines into paragraphs, spot heading-like lines, and package everything as a valid OOXML file that Word, Pages, LibreOffice and Google Docs all open natively.
Under the hood, this tool uses pdf.js to decode the PDF and JSZip to assemble the .docx package. Everything runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
How does a PDF store text, exactly?
A PDF does not store paragraphs. It stores a content stream of drawing instructions: "place glyph 34 at (120, 720)", "place glyph 55 at (135, 720)", and so on. Each glyph maps to a Unicode character through the font's encoding table. The converter reads that stream, applies the encoding, sorts items top-to-bottom and left-to-right, then groups them into lines and paragraphs.
Who should use a PDF to Word converter?
Anyone who needs to edit the words inside a PDF: writers revising a draft, editors fixing typos in a received document, translators working from a source PDF, and anyone who wants the content in a format they can style. If you only need the raw words, PDF to Text is faster and lighter.
Why convert PDF to Word instead of retyping?
Retyping a long PDF is slow and error-prone. A converter gives you an editable draft in seconds, so you can spend your time on the changes that matter.
Editable content in one step
The .docx opens straight in Word, Pages, LibreOffice and Google Docs. Paragraphs and headings are already in place, so you can adjust wording, restyle text, or paste sections into another document without reformatting from scratch.
Document metadata
The title and author you set are written into the .docx properties. The file shows the correct name in Word's title bar and file explorer, and in Google Docs the document title pre-fills from the file name.
Page breaks you control
For reports where each PDF page maps to a distinct chapter, turn on Page break per PDF page and each PDF page starts on its own Word page. For continuous prose — articles, letters, books — leave it off and let Word reflow the text naturally.
How to convert a PDF to Word in 5 steps
The conversion is short and needs no account. Follow these steps and the first .docx will be ready in under a minute.
- Add your PDFDrag a text-based PDF onto the upload card, click Browse, or import from Google Drive or Dropbox. The file is opened in your browser with pdf.js — nothing is uploaded to a server.
- Set title and authorThe document title pre-fills from the filename; edit it if you want. Add an author name and it is written into the .docx metadata so the file shows the right properties in Word.
- Pick pages to convertConvert all pages, or choose a custom range like 1-50, 55-90. Skipping pages you do not need makes the conversion faster and keeps the .docx small.
- Choose page-break behaviourToggle "Insert a page break for every PDF page" if each PDF page should start on its own Word page. Leave it off for continuous flow, which is better for articles and reports.
- Convert and downloadClick Convert to Word. The tool extracts each page, detects headings, groups lines into paragraphs, builds the OOXML package with JSZip, and downloads a real .docx that opens in Word, Pages, LibreOffice and Google Docs.
Test with page 1 first
On long PDFs, check the preview before converting everything. If the preview shows only a handful of characters, the PDF is likely scanned and this tool cannot help — an OCR pass is needed first.
What the .docx actually contains
The output is a real OOXML package: [Content_Types].xml, relationships, styles, document properties and document.xml with one paragraph per extracted block. Headings become Heading 1 paragraphs; everything else becomes Normal paragraphs with the default line spacing.
The four Word settings explained
Each setting changes the shape of the output. The defaults are safe for most PDFs.
Document title
Pre-fills from the filename. Written into the .docx core properties and shown in Word's title bar. Edit it if the file name is cryptic.
Author
Optional. Written into the core properties alongside the title. Used in Word's document info and when the file is shared.
Pages
All pages, or a custom range like 1-50, 55-90. Skipping pages shortens conversion and keeps the .docx small.
Page break per page
On: each PDF page starts a new Word page. Off: continuous flow, better for prose and reports.
Honest limit: headings are detected heuristically by line height. A page full of large body text can produce false headings, and a page of small headings can miss them. The paragraph grouping is equally heuristic. If the output looks wrong, convert again with a different range, or use PDF to Text for a plain version you can style by hand.
Features of the PDF to Word converter
The tool was built for people who need an editable draft without setup.
Heading detection
Lines noticeably taller than the page's median line height — and short enough to be a title — become Heading 1 paragraphs. This catches most section titles and lets you restyle them all at once in Word.
Paragraph grouping
Lines that share a paragraph are merged into one paragraph. Large vertical gaps between lines trigger a paragraph break, so sections and lists stay separated in the Word file.
Page range selection
Convert all pages, or enter a range like 1-50, 55-90. Only the pages you list are processed, in order.
Optional page breaks
Turn on Page break per PDF page if each PDF page should start on a new Word page. Leave it off for continuous flow.
Real .docx output
The file is a valid OOXML package with styles, document properties and proper section settings (Letter size, 1-inch margins). It opens in Word, Pages, LibreOffice and Google Docs without warnings.
Private, local processing
Everything runs in your browser. The PDF is read with pdf.js, the .docx is assembled with JSZip, and the file is created locally. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored.
Text-based vs scanned PDFs
This is the most important thing to understand about PDF to Word conversion. Only one type of PDF works.
Text-based PDFs
Created by Word, Google Docs, LaTeX, online invoices, LibreOffice and most digital reports. They contain a real text layer that can be selected, copied and extracted. These convert well, and every setting works as intended.
Scanned PDFs
Created by a scanner or a phone camera. Each page is a picture with no text layer. Selecting text does nothing. These need OCR before they can be converted.
Quick test
Open the PDF and try to select a sentence with your mouse. If the text highlights, it has a text layer and this tool will read it. If nothing highlights, it is scanned and will need OCR first.
PDF to Word vs other conversion methods
Several tools can convert a PDF to Word. This table compares the common ones so you can pick the right tool for the task.
| Method | Runs in browser | Preserves layout | Handles scanned PDFs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| This tool | Yes | Text flow only | No (needs OCR) | Text-based PDFs, quick editable drafts, privacy |
| Copy-paste into Word | Yes | Partial | No | One or two pages, quick edits |
| Adobe Acrobat Pro | Yes | Near-perfect | Yes (built-in OCR) | Scanned PDFs, layout-critical documents |
| LibreOffice Draw | No | Partial | No | Free desktop conversion |
| Online paid services | Yes | Near-perfect | Sometimes | Scanned PDFs, heavy documents |
Rule of thumb: if the PDF is text-based and you care about privacy, this tool is the fastest path to an editable .docx. If it is scanned or layout-critical, use a desktop converter or a paid service with OCR — no browser tool can reconstruct a picture as text.
Your PDF stays private
Everything happens in your browser. The PDF is loaded with pdf.js, the text is extracted page by page, and the .docx is assembled with JSZip. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored. When you close the tab, the file is gone from memory.
Local processing
Conversion runs on your device, so confidential documents never leave your computer or phone. There is no server, no log, no retention window — which is why the tool is safe for legal, medical and financial documents.
Direct cloud downloads
When you import from Google Drive or Dropbox, your browser fetches the file straight from that provider after you grant access. The file is processed locally, not routed through any server of ours.

Tips for a cleaner Word file
- Set a meaningful title. The title becomes the document name in Word and Google Docs — a clean title saves a rename later.
- Use page breaks for reports, not prose. Page breaks help when each PDF page is a distinct section; they interrupt reading for continuous text.
- Convert a page range first on long PDFs. A test run tells you whether heading detection is working before you process 500 pages.
- Restyle headings in Word, not here. The converter writes plain Heading 1s. Font, colour and spacing belong in Word's style system, where you can change them all at once.
- Fix tables after conversion. Tables are flattened into paragraphs. If tabular structure matters, use PDF to Excel or PDF to CSV instead.
- Compress the source PDF first. Smaller PDFs convert faster. Run them through our Compress PDF tool.
Common problems and quick fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Preview is empty or "No meaningful text" | The PDF is scanned or image-only | Run it through an OCR tool first, or test by selecting text in a viewer. |
| Headings detected in body text | Large line-height body font | Restyle those paragraphs in Word, or convert with a smaller page range and check page by page. |
| Paragraphs split at wrong places | Unusual line spacing in the source PDF | Join or split paragraphs in Word; the heuristic is approximate. |
| Characters look wrong | Font has no Unicode map | This is a PDF-internal limitation. An OCR pass that reconstructs text from glyph images can recover it. |
| Only some pages convert | Custom range excludes pages, or some pages are scanned | Set Pages to All pages and compare. |
| Cloud import fails | The sign-in window was blocked | Allow pop-ups for this site, then press the Drive or Dropbox button again. |
