PDF to WPS extracts the text layer from a PDF and rebuilds it as a WPS Office document packaged as OOXML. Load a text-based PDF, set the title, font, size and alignment, choose which pages to convert, then download a .wps file that opens in WPS Office, Word and LibreOffice. It works on digital PDFs — not scanned images, which need OCR first. Everything runs in your browser, so your document never leaves your device.
What is a PDF to WPS converter?
A PDF to WPS converter reads the text layer inside a PDF and rebuilds it as a WPS Office document. PDFs fix every character at a precise position on the page; WPS Office reflows text. The converter's job is to read the words, reconstruct reading order, group lines into paragraphs, spot heading-like lines, and package everything as a real OOXML file that WPS Office, Word and LibreOffice all open natively.
Under the hood, this tool uses pdf.js to decode the PDF and JSZip to assemble the .wps package. Everything runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
What is a .wps file, exactly?
WPS is the native word-processor format of WPS Office (Kingsoft Office). Modern .wps files are OOXML packages — the same container format used by .docx — with WPS-specific metadata. That means the same internals that power Word documents also power WPS documents, which is why this tool can build a fully valid .wps with [Content_Types].xml, relationships, styles, settings, document properties and document.xml.
Who should use a PDF to WPS converter?
Anyone working with WPS Office: students, freelancers, small-business teams and users in regions where WPS Office is the default word processor. If you need a standard .docx instead, use PDF to Word. If you only need the raw words, use PDF to Text.
Why convert PDF to WPS instead of retyping?
Retyping a long PDF into WPS Office is slow and error-prone. A converter gives you an editable draft in seconds, so you can spend your time on the changes that matter.
Editable content in one step
The .wps opens straight in WPS Office, Word and LibreOffice. Paragraphs and headings are already in place, so you can adjust wording, restyle text, or paste sections into another document without reformatting from scratch.
Font and alignment settings that stick
Pick Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman, Georgia or Courier New, choose a font size and set alignment. These choices are written into the OOXML styles so the document opens with the styling you chose instead of a default.
Page breaks you control
For reports where each PDF page maps to a distinct chapter, leave Insert page breaks on and each PDF page starts on its own WPS page. For continuous prose — articles, letters, books — turn it off and let WPS Office reflow the text naturally.
How to convert a PDF to WPS in 5 steps
The conversion is short and needs no account. Follow these steps and the first .wps will be ready in under a minute.
- Add your PDFDrag a text-based PDF onto the upload card, click Browse, or import from Google Drive or Dropbox. The file is opened in your browser with pdf.js — nothing is uploaded to a server.
- Set title and formattingThe document title pre-fills from the filename. Pick a font (Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman, Georgia, Courier New), a font size and an alignment. These are written into the WPS styles so the document opens styled.
- Pick pages and togglesConvert all pages, only the first, or a custom range. Toggle heading detection, paragraph grouping and page breaks — all three are on by default and match most WPS Office workflows.
- Preview the documentSwitch between Preview (formatted with headings and page markers) and Text (plain extracted text). The preview updates live as you change font, size and alignment.
- Convert and downloadClick Convert to WPS. The tool extracts each page, groups lines into paragraphs, detects headings, builds a real OOXML package with JSZip, and downloads a .wps that opens in WPS Office, Word and LibreOffice.
Test with page 1 first
On long PDFs, check the preview before converting everything. If the preview shows only a handful of characters, the PDF is likely scanned and this tool cannot help — an OCR pass is needed first.
What the .wps actually contains
The output is a real OOXML package: [Content_Types].xml, relationships, styles, settings, document properties and document.xml with one paragraph per extracted block. Headings become Heading 1 paragraphs; everything else becomes Normal paragraphs with the font, size and alignment you chose.
The WPS settings explained
Each setting changes the shape of the output. The defaults are safe for most PDFs.
Document title
Pre-fills from the filename. Written into the .wps core properties and shown as a centred title at the top of the document. Edit it if the file name is cryptic.
Font family & size
Calibri (Word's default), Arial, Times New Roman, Georgia or Courier New, at 10, 11, 12 or 14 pt. Written into the OOXML styles so the document opens styled.
Alignment
Left, Justify, Center or Right. The choice is applied to body paragraphs through the paragraph defaults.
Page range
All pages, only the first, or a custom range with From and To. Skipping pages shortens conversion and keeps the .wps small.
Detect headings
Tall lines become Heading 1 paragraphs. Turn off if a page full of large body text produces false headings.
Group lines
Merges lines that share a paragraph. Turn off to keep every PDF line as its own WPS paragraph, matching the source layout more closely.
Insert page breaks
On: each PDF page starts a new WPS page. Off: continuous flow, better for prose and reports.
Preview vs Text
Preview shows the formatted document with headings and page markers. Text shows the raw plain-text stream that will be written into the .wps.
Download .wps
Downloads a real OOXML package labelled .wps, which WPS Office opens natively and Word or LibreOffice open as an equivalent document.
Honest limit: headings are detected heuristically by line height. A page full of large body text can produce false headings, and a page of small headings can miss them. The paragraph grouping is equally heuristic. If the output looks wrong, toggle heading detection off, or use PDF to Text for a plain version you can style by hand.
Features of the PDF to WPS converter
The tool was built for people who need an editable WPS Office draft without setup.
Heading detection
Lines noticeably taller than the page's median line height — and short enough to be a title — become Heading 1 paragraphs. This catches most section titles and lets you restyle them all at once in WPS Office.
Paragraph grouping
Lines that share a paragraph are merged into one paragraph. Large vertical gaps between lines trigger a paragraph break, so sections and lists stay separated in the .wps file.
Font, size and alignment
Choose the document's font (Calibri, Arial, Times New Roman, Georgia or Courier New), font size (10–14 pt) and alignment (Left, Justify, Center, Right). The choices are applied to body paragraphs through the OOXML styles.
Optional page breaks
Leave Insert page breaks on if each PDF page should start on a new WPS page. Turn it off for continuous flow.
Preview and Text tabs
Switch between a formatted Preview (headings, paragraphs, page markers) and a plain Text view of the exact stream that will be written into the .wps. The preview updates live as you change settings.
Real .wps output
The file is a real OOXML package with styles, settings, document properties and proper section settings (A4 size, 1-inch margins). It opens in WPS Office, Word and LibreOffice without warnings.
Private, local processing
Everything runs in your browser. The PDF is read with pdf.js, the OOXML package is assembled with JSZip, and the file is created locally. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored.
Text-based vs scanned PDFs
This is the most important thing to understand about PDF to WPS conversion. Only one type of PDF works.
Text-based PDFs
Created by Word, Google Docs, LaTeX, online invoices, LibreOffice and most digital reports. They contain a real text layer that can be selected, copied and extracted. These convert well, and every setting works as intended.
Scanned PDFs
Created by a scanner or a phone camera. Each page is a picture with no text layer. Selecting text does nothing. These need OCR before they can be converted.
Quick test
Open the PDF and try to select a sentence with your mouse. If the text highlights, it has a text layer and this tool will read it. If nothing highlights, it is scanned and will need OCR first.
PDF to WPS vs other conversion methods
Several tools can convert a PDF to WPS Office or Word. This table compares the common ones so you can pick the right tool for the task.
| Method | Runs in browser | Preserves layout | Handles scanned PDFs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| This tool | Yes | Text flow only | No (needs OCR) | Text-based PDFs, quick editable WPS drafts, privacy |
| Copy-paste into WPS Office | Yes | Partial | No | One or two pages, quick edits |
| WPS Office PDF import (premium) | No | Near-perfect | Sometimes | Scanned PDFs, layout-critical documents |
| LibreOffice Draw | No | Partial | No | Free desktop conversion |
| Online paid services | Yes | Near-perfect | Sometimes | Scanned PDFs, heavy documents |
Rule of thumb: if the PDF is text-based and you care about privacy, this tool is the fastest path to an editable .wps. If it is scanned or layout-critical, use WPS Office's PDF import or a paid service with OCR — no browser tool can reconstruct a picture as text.
Your PDF stays private
Everything happens in your browser. The PDF is loaded with pdf.js, the text is extracted page by page, and the .wps is assembled with JSZip. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored. When you close the tab, the file is gone from memory.
Local processing
Conversion runs on your device, so confidential documents never leave your computer or phone. There is no server, no log, no retention window — which is why the tool is safe for legal, medical and financial documents.
Direct cloud downloads
When you import from Google Drive or Dropbox, your browser fetches the file straight from that provider after you grant access. The file is processed locally, not routed through any server of ours.

Tips for a cleaner WPS file
- Set a meaningful title. The title becomes the document name in WPS Office — a clean title saves a rename later.
- Choose Calibri for maximum compatibility. It is Word's default and renders cleanly in every WPS Office version.
- Use page breaks for reports, not prose. Page breaks help when each PDF page is a distinct section; they interrupt reading for continuous text.
- Convert a page range first on long PDFs. A test run tells you whether heading detection is working before you process 500 pages.
- Restyle headings in WPS Office, not here. The converter writes plain Heading 1s. Font, colour and spacing belong in WPS Office's style system.
- Fix tables after conversion. Tables are flattened into paragraphs. If tabular structure matters, use PDF to Excel or PDF to CSV instead.
- Compress the source PDF first. Smaller PDFs convert faster. Run them through our Compress PDF tool.
Common problems and quick fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Preview is empty | The PDF is scanned or image-only | Run it through an OCR tool first, or test by selecting text in a viewer. |
| Headings detected in body text | Large line-height body font | Toggle heading detection off, or restyle those paragraphs in WPS Office. |
| Paragraphs split at wrong places | Unusual line spacing in the source PDF | Toggle paragraph grouping off to keep every line separate, or join/split in WPS Office. |
| Characters look wrong | Font has no Unicode map | This is a PDF-internal limitation. An OCR pass that reconstructs text from glyph images can recover it. |
| Only some pages convert | Page range excludes pages, or some pages are scanned | Set Page range to All pages and compare. |
| Cloud import fails | The sign-in window was blocked | Allow pop-ups for this site, then press the Drive or Dropbox button again. |
