EPUB to PDF turns an eBook file into a fixed-layout PDF that opens on any device. Drop a .epub file onto the upload card, review the cover and chapter list, pick which chapters to include, choose page size, orientation, font and margins, then press Convert to PDF. The tool reads the EPUB container in your browser with JSZip, extracts chapter text and headings, and writes the PDF with pdf-lib. Nothing is uploaded. Download the file, or share a link to the tool with friends and colleagues. The process is free, needs no signup, and works on phones, tablets and computers.
What is an EPUB to PDF converter?
An EPUB to PDF converter takes an eBook file in the EPUB format and turns it into a PDF that opens the same way on every device. EPUB is an open eBook standard based on XHTML, CSS and images, packaged inside a ZIP archive. It is designed for reflowable reading: the text flows to fit the screen, so a phone shows shorter lines than a tablet or a desktop monitor.
That flexibility is great for reading apps, but it is not ideal for printing, archiving or sharing a fixed document. A PDF locks the layout. Every reader sees the same page breaks, the same fonts and the same margins. Libraries, teachers, researchers and business teams often convert EPUB to PDF for exactly that reason. A single PDF is easier to email, upload to a document portal, print at a print shop and store for long-term archives.
The PDF format is an open standard published as ISO 32000. You can read its background in the Wikipedia article on PDF, and the EPUB history in the EPUB article. The official EPUB 3 spec lives at the W3C website.
How to convert EPUB to PDF in 4 steps
The tool follows a simple path. You never need to install software or create an account. Follow these steps for a clean result on your first try.
- Add your EPUB fileDrag a .epub file onto the upload card, click Browse, or import it from Google Drive or Dropbox. The tool reads the manifest, metadata and spine inside the EPUB container.
- Review the book detailsThe editor shows the cover, title, author and publisher, plus a chapters list with word counts. Uncheck any chapter you do not want in the final PDF.
- Choose page and font optionsPick page size, orientation, font family, font size and margins. Toggle the title page, table of contents, chapter headings, images, page numbers and justified text.
- Convert and downloadClick Convert to PDF and watch the progress circle. Then download the finished PDF or share it. The whole process runs inside your browser.
A short book converts in a few seconds. A large novel with dozens of chapters takes longer, because each chapter is extracted, measured and drawn page by page. Keep an eye on the progress circle for live status, and stay on the page until the download button appears.
Everything the converter can do
Beyond basic conversion, the tool packs the controls that people normally pay for. This table lists each setting, its options, and the effect you can expect.
| Setting | Options | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Chapter selection | Per-chapter checkbox | Includes only the chapters you tick, so you can skip front matter or appendices. |
| Page size | A4, Letter, A5, A3, eReader, Legal | Sets the paper size for every page, including a 6×9 inch eReader size for tablets and phones. |
| Orientation | Portrait, Landscape | Portrait is best for long prose; landscape suits wide tables and images. |
| Font family | Helvetica, Times, Courier | Matches the tone of the book: sans-serif for modern, serif for fiction, monospace for code. |
| Font size | 10, 12, 14, 16 pt | Balances readability against how much text fits on each page. |
| Margin | 50, 70, 90 pt | Adds white space around the text for printing and binding. |
| Title page | On or off | Prints a centred title page with author and publisher. |
| Table of contents | On or off | Lists every selected chapter on its own page. |
| Chapter headings | On or off | Draws each chapter title in bold before its body text. |
| Include images | On or off | Counts images per chapter, and includes image references in the text layout. |
| Page numbers | On or off | Prints a small page number at the bottom of every body page. |
| Justify text | On or off | Aligns body text to both margins, like a printed book. |
Once the PDF is ready, edit it with our PDF editor, lock it with protect PDF, or add a signature with sign PDF.
Page sizes and orientation explained
Choosing the right page size prevents tiny text and awkward margins. Most of the world uses the ISO 216 “A” series, where each size halves the one before it. The United States and Canada use Letter and Legal. eBooks also have a common 6×9 inch trade paperback size, which is what the eReader option uses.
| Size | Millimetres | Inches | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A5 | 148 × 210 | 5.83 × 8.27 | Pocket books, notes, short stories |
| A4 | 210 × 297 | 8.27 × 11.69 | Default for most documents and printing |
| A3 | 297 × 420 | 11.69 × 16.54 | Large print, children's books, posters |
| Letter | 216 × 279 | 8.5 × 11 | US and Canadian printing |
| Legal | 216 × 356 | 8.5 × 14 | Legal filings, long scripts |
| eReader | 152 × 229 | 6 × 9 | Tablet and phone screens, trade paperbacks |
Orientation works the same way across sizes. Choose Portrait for prose, which is 95 percent of EPUB books. Choose Landscape only if the book contains many wide tables or images, or if you plan to read it on a wide monitor.
Why convert EPUB books to PDF?
People convert EPUB to PDF every day, and the reasons go beyond tidiness. A PDF opens the same on any device, so the reader sees exactly what you intended. These are the most common situations.
Printing and binding
Most print shops accept PDF but not EPUB. Converting before you order copies avoids formatting surprises and page count guesswork.
Academic references
Researchers quote fixed page numbers in citations. A PDF gives stable pagination that an EPUB reader cannot.
Long-term archives
Libraries and archives prefer PDF for storage because it preserves layout and is easy to validate with checksums.
Chapter-only PDFs
Students and teachers extract only the chapters they need, keeping the file small and easy to email.
Website downloads
Authors give away preview PDFs that include the first two chapters, and keep the rest for the paid edition.
Submissions and proposals
Publishers, agents and grant programs ask for PDF manuscripts. Convert, then add a title page and page numbers.
After conversion, continue the workflow with merge PDFs to combine several books, or compress PDF to shrink email attachments.
Your book stays private
Privacy matters because EPUB books often contain unpublished manuscripts, personal notes, drafts and purchased content. This converter runs entirely in your browser. The tool reads the EPUB container on your device, extracts chapter text with JSZip, and writes the PDF with pdf-lib. Neither library sends anything to a server.
- Local processing. The conversion code runs on your device, which also makes it fast on a good connection and usable on slow ones once the page has loaded.
- Direct cloud downloads. When you import from Google Drive or Dropbox, your browser fetches the file straight from that provider after you grant access.
- No account needed. You can convert without logging in. Read our privacy policy for full details about the site.
Formatting, images and layout
EPUB books use XHTML and CSS, which means the original file can contain complex layouts: drop caps, side notes, multi-column text and custom fonts. This converter simplifies those layouts into a clean flowing text PDF that reads like a printed book. The result is more readable on every screen, but it does not preserve exotic CSS.
| EPUB element | What the PDF does |
|---|---|
| Chapter headings (h1, h2, h3) | Preserved as bold chapter titles and sub-headings when “Include chapter headings” is on. |
| Paragraphs | Detected as block elements and separated by a small vertical gap. |
| Bold and italic | Rebuilt with the bold or italic variant of the chosen font family. |
| Lists | Flattened into paragraphs, one item per line. |
| Images | Counted and referenced. Full image embedding requires a PDF editor with image support. |
| Tables | Flattened into text. For a proper table, use the CSV to PDF tool. |
| Custom fonts | Replaced by Helvetica, Times or Courier, so every reader sees the same rendering. |
| Footnotes | Kept as inline text. They are not linked to their anchors in the PDF. |
| Cover image | Shown in the editor and used as a visual reference. The PDF title page is text-based. |
Tip: if you want a pixel-perfect copy of the original EPUB, use a dedicated eBook reader with a “print to PDF” feature. This tool focuses on clean, readable, archivable text PDFs, which is what most people actually need.
DRM and EPUB support
EPUB books come in two flavours: DRM-free and DRM-protected. The tool works with DRM-free EPUB files, which are the standard for public library downloads, Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, self-published books and most indie authors. DRM-protected EPUBs (from stores like Amazon Kindle, Apple Books or Kobo) encrypt the content so that only a licensed reader can open them.
- DRM-free sources. Project Gutenberg, Standard Ebooks, many university presses, self-published authors and open-access collections.
- DRM-protected sources. Kindle books, Kobo purchased books, Apple Books purchases and most subscription services. These cannot be converted by any browser tool.
- Checking a file. If the EPUB opens in Calibre or your eReader without a prompt, it is DRM-free. If it asks for an account, it is DRM-protected.
Tips for the best PDF results
- Pick serif for fiction. Times reads more like a printed novel than Helvetica, and it saves a little space in long books.
- Use 12pt with 70pt margins for standard reading. That combination fits about 350 words per A4 page, close to a printed trade paperback.
- Add the title page for submissions. Agents and publishers expect a title page with the author name.
- Skip front matter with chapter selection. Copyright pages, dedication and foreword often add clutter. Tick only the chapters you need.
- Use eReader size for phone reading. 6×9 inch pages fit mobile screens without pinch-zooming.
- Justify text for print, leave ragged for screen. Justification looks traditional on paper but can create large gaps on narrow phone screens.
- Keep page numbers off for previews. They look professional on printed books but clutter short previews and social posts.
- Preview before you share. A short conversion confirms the file looks right; you can always re-convert with different settings.
Common problems and quick fixes
Most conversion problems come from a handful of causes. Check this list before you start over, because each fix takes only a few seconds.
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| EPUB will not open | The file has DRM protection. | Use a DRM-free copy. Browser tools cannot decrypt protected EPUB files. |
| Chapters are out of order | The spine order differs from the visible TOC. | Re-export the EPUB from Calibre or the original source, or accept the spine order this tool uses. |
| Chapter titles are generic | The EPUB uses images instead of text for headings. | Enable OCR on the source, or edit the resulting PDF with our PDF editor. |
| Text is missing | The chapter uses script-driven content. | Open the EPUB in Calibre, export a new version, and try again. |
| Accented characters appear wrong | The EPUB file has broken UTF-8 encoding. | Open the EPUB in Calibre and re-export, which normalises the encoding. |
| Conversion is very slow | The book is very long or contains hundreds of chapters. | Uncheck chapters you do not need, or convert in parts and merge later. |
| Cloud import fails | The sign-in window was blocked or closed. | Allow pop-ups for this site, then press the Drive or Dropbox button again. |
If a file still fails after these checks, open it in Calibre, a free cross-platform eBook manager. Calibre can inspect the EPUB structure and re-export a clean copy.
EPUB, MOBI, AZW and PDF compared
eBook formats split into two families: reflowable and fixed. This tool converts from reflowable EPUB to fixed PDF, which is the most common direction for archiving, printing and sharing.
| Format | Layout | Typical use | Convert to PDF here? |
|---|---|---|---|
| EPUB | Reflowable | eBooks, public libraries | Yes |
| MOBI / AZW3 | Reflowable | Older Kindle formats | No — convert to EPUB first |
| Fixed | Archives, print, submissions | Already PDF | |
| DOCX | Editable | Manuscripts, reports | Use the Word to PDF tool |
If you start with a MOBI or AZW3 file, convert it to EPUB in Calibre first, then drop the EPUB here. That two-step flow preserves the chapter structure better than a direct MOBI conversion.
