PDF to Text extracts the embedded text layer from a PDF and saves it as a UTF-8 .txt file. Upload a text-based PDF, choose layout-aware or flowing extraction, preview the result, then copy it or download it. It works on digital PDFs — not scanned images, which need OCR first. Everything runs in your browser, so your document never leaves your device.
What is a PDF to Text converter?
A PDF to Text converter reads the text layer embedded inside a PDF and writes it out as a plain .txt file. PDFs are a display format — every character is stored as a glyph positioned on a page — and this tool parses that structure and reconstructs readable characters, preserving or flattening line breaks depending on the mode you choose.
Under the hood, this tool uses pdf.js, Mozilla's open-source PDF library, to decode the PDF and read its text items with their positions. The tool then sorts those items top-to-bottom and left-to-right, groups them into lines, and stitches the lines back together. Everything runs in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.
How does a PDF store text, exactly?
A PDF does not store a paragraph as a sequence of characters. It stores a content stream of drawing instructions: "place glyph 34 at (120, 720)", "place glyph 55 at (135, 720)", and so on. Each glyph is a code that maps to a Unicode character through the font's encoding table. The converter's job is to read that stream, apply the encoding, and output readable text in the order the page intends.
Who should use a PDF to Text extractor?
Anyone who needs the words inside a PDF without the formatting: researchers quoting a paper, developers feeding text into a script, editors searching for a phrase across a document, translators extracting source strings, and anyone who wants the content in a lightweight format that opens anywhere. Plain text is also the safest input for downstream tools like PDF to JSON, PDF to CSV and LLM pipelines.
Why convert PDF to text instead of copying from the page?
You can copy text from a PDF in a viewer, but the result is often broken — missing spaces, jumbled line breaks, wrong order — because the viewer guesses reading order from positions. A dedicated extractor applies real heuristics and gives you clean, sequential text in one shot.
Copying loses line structure
Modern PDF viewers reconstruct lines by scanning for text runs at the same y-coordinate. That works for simple pages but fails on multi-column layouts, footnotes and sidebars, where the reconstruction order can flip columns or interleave paragraphs. A dedicated extractor lets you pick Layout aware mode to preserve the page structure, or Flowing mode to merge everything into continuous prose.
Post-processing saves editing time
Copied text often arrives with extra blank lines, trailing spaces, inconsistent hyphenation and page-number headers. This tool offers three post-processing toggles — page markers, blank-line collapse and trailing-space trim — that fix the most common issues before you touch the text. What would be a ten-minute cleanup becomes a single click.
Plain text works everywhere
A .txt file opens in every editor, on every OS, without conversion. That makes it the ideal intermediate format when you plan to feed the content into another tool: a search index, an LLM prompt, a script, a database import. Unlike PDF, DOCX or HTML, plain text has no structure to strip before you get to the words.
How to extract text from a PDF in 5 steps
The extraction is short and needs no account. Follow these steps and the first .txt will be ready in under a minute.
- Add your PDFDrag a text-based PDF onto the upload card, click Browse, or import directly from Google Drive or Dropbox. The tool loads the file inside your browser using pdf.js — nothing is uploaded to a server.
- Choose an extraction modeLayout aware keeps line breaks, flowing merges lines into paragraphs, and raw puts every text item on its own line. Try Layout aware first; switch only if the output looks wrong.
- Pick the page rangeExtract all pages, only the first page, or a custom range from page X to page Y. Useful for previewing one chapter before processing a 500-page document.
- Toggle post-processingAdd page markers to separate PDF pages, collapse extra blank lines, and trim trailing spaces. All three toggles are on by default and match most workflows.
- Extract, copy, or downloadClick Extract Text. Preview the result, copy it to the clipboard with one click, or download it as a .txt file. UTF-8 encoding keeps accents, currency symbols and non-Latin scripts intact.
Testing with one page first
Before extracting a 500-page report, choose First page only and inspect the preview. Confirm the mode and post-processing look right, then extract the full document. This is faster than re-extracting after discovering the wrong mode setting.
Pasting into another tool
Once you have the text, the Copy button puts it on your clipboard. From there it can go straight into a chat, an email, a code editor, a spreadsheet cell, or an LLM prompt. If you need structured output instead of plain text, use PDF to JSON or PDF to CSV instead.
Layout aware vs Flowing vs Raw extraction
The three modes produce very different text from the same PDF. Choose the one that matches the content.
Layout aware
Keeps the line breaks you see on the page. Best for code, poetry, tables, forms, invoices and any document where line breaks carry meaning. This is the default.
Flowing text
Merges lines that share a paragraph into one long paragraph. Best for prose, articles, books, reports and newsletters. Line breaks inside paragraphs disappear, blank lines remain as paragraph breaks.
Raw
Puts every text item on its own line. Best when you want to inspect exactly what the PDF contains, character by character, or when other modes produce odd results. Also useful for diffing two versions of the same PDF.
Honest limit: all three modes are heuristics. A multi-column magazine, a footnote-heavy academic paper, or a form with sidebars may extract text in the wrong order even in Layout aware mode. If the result looks wrong, try a different mode, extract a smaller page range, or open the PDF in a viewer and copy from there for that specific page.
Features of the PDF to Text converter
The tool was built for people who need clean, portable text without friction.
Three extraction modes
Layout aware, Flowing and Raw each serve a different purpose. Switching modes is instant — no re-upload, no re-render — so you can try all three and keep the one that reads correctly.
Page range selection
Extract all pages, only the first page, or a custom range from page X to page Y. Useful for previewing one chapter before processing a full book, or for pulling a specific appendix out of a long report.
Post-processing toggles
Add page markers to keep PDF pages separated in the output, collapse 3+ consecutive newlines to 2, and trim trailing whitespace on every line. All three are safe to leave on for most workflows.
UTF-8 output
The downloaded .txt is UTF-8 encoded, so accented letters (é, ñ, ü), currency symbols (€, £, ¥), Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Hebrew, Devanagari and CJK characters all survive extraction and open correctly in any modern editor.
One-click copy
After extraction, the Copy button puts the entire result on your clipboard. No download, no file manager, no open-and-save dance. Perfect for pasting into a chat, an email or an LLM prompt.
Private, local processing
Everything runs in your browser. The PDF is read with pdf.js, the text is extracted in JavaScript, and the .txt file is created locally with a Blob. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored.
Text-based vs scanned PDFs
This is the most important thing to understand about PDF text extraction. Only one type of PDF works.
Text-based PDFs
Created by Word, Google Docs, LaTeX, online invoices, LibreOffice and most digital reports. They contain a real text layer that can be selected, copied and extracted. These convert perfectly, and every extraction mode works as intended.
Scanned PDFs
Created by a scanner or a phone camera. Each page is a picture with no text layer. Selecting text does nothing. These need OCR before they can be converted.
Quick test
Open the PDF and try to select a sentence with your mouse. If the text highlights, it has a text layer and this tool will read it. If nothing highlights, it is scanned and will need OCR first.
PDF to Text vs other extraction methods
Several tools can pull text out of a PDF. This table compares the common ones so you can pick the right tool for the task.
| Method | Runs in browser | Setup | Handles scanned PDFs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| This tool | Yes | None | No (needs OCR) | Text-based PDFs, quick extraction, private documents |
| Desktop PDF viewer copy | Yes | Install viewer | No | One page, quick copy |
| Adobe Acrobat Pro | Yes | Paid license | Yes (built-in OCR) | Scanned PDFs, structured export |
| Command-line (pdftotext, pdfminer) | No | Install, script | No | Batch extraction, pipelines |
| Online paid services | Yes | Upload to server | Sometimes | Scanned PDFs, heavy documents |
Rule of thumb: if the PDF is text-based and you care about privacy, this tool is the fastest path. If it is scanned, use an OCR tool first — either a desktop OCR app, Tesseract, or a cloud OCR service — then extract the OCR result here.
Your PDF stays private
Everything happens in your browser. The PDF is loaded with pdf.js, the text is extracted page by page, and the .txt file is created with a local Blob. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored. When you close the tab, the file is gone from memory.
Local processing
Text extraction runs on your device, so confidential documents never leave your computer or phone. There is no server, no log, no retention window — which is why the tool is safe for legal, medical and financial documents.
Direct cloud downloads
When you import from Google Drive or Dropbox, your browser fetches the file straight from that provider after you grant access. The file is processed locally, not routed through any server of ours.

Tips for cleaner text extraction
- Try Layout aware first. It preserves the structure you see on screen and is a safe default for most PDFs.
- Switch to Flowing for prose. Articles, books and reports read better when lines are merged into paragraphs.
- Use Raw when debugging. If the text looks wrong, Raw mode shows exactly what the PDF contains so you can see whether the extraction or the source is at fault.
- Extract a page range before the whole document. A small test tells you whether the mode is right without waiting for a 500-page run.
- Turn off page markers for a single document. They are useful across a report, but clutter when you just want one clean file.
- Compress the source PDF first. Smaller PDFs extract faster. Run them through our Compress PDF tool.
- For structured output, use a specialised tool. Text-only is not always enough. PDF to JSON, PDF to CSV and PDF to Excel produce typed data.
Common problems and quick fixes
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Preview is empty | The PDF is scanned or image-only | Run it through an OCR tool first, or test by selecting text in a viewer. |
| Text is jumbled | Multi-column PDF | Try Raw mode to see the extraction order, or open the PDF and copy the specific page manually. |
| Characters look wrong (e.g. "¤" or gibberish) | Font has no Unicode map | This is a PDF-internal limitation. Try a different viewer or an OCR tool that reconstructs text from glyph images. |
| Accented letters show as ? | Encoding issue in the source PDF | The tool already writes UTF-8; if the source PDF is broken, only an OCR pass can recover the text. |
| Only some pages extract | Page range is limited, or some pages are scanned | Set Page range to All pages and compare. |
| Cloud import fails | The sign-in window was blocked | Allow pop-ups for this site, then press the Drive or Dropbox button again. |
